Good to Go
Friedhelm Weidemann has spent a long time preparing for the competition and the local conditions. He’s ready for the Jungle Marathon.
Friedhelm Weidemann will face extreme conditions in the rain forest: 100 percent air humidity, temperatures of 40°C, lots of rain. He also has to be completely self-reliant and carry his provisions for the whole of the grueling Jungle Marathon on his back. The organizers only provide water. His backpack contains the essentials: dehydrated food, hammock, spare clothes, knife, compass and mosquito repellent. In the Amazon, dangerous creatures could be lurking round every corner – at least he can protect himself against annoying ants and mosquitos.
Will everything in the backpack stay dry, even in torrential rain? And what will the air humidity and extreme stress do to his body? Friedhelm Weidemann puts himself and his equipment to the test in the Vaillant rain chamber. Even when he’s not preparing for an event, the extreme athlete runs 250 kilometers a month to keep himself fit. That’s 3,000 kilometers a year. But he has no idea how the jungle climate will affect him.
